An old leather couch is very valuable furniture in our house, especially if it was made of genuine leather. It would not only have valuable memory, but also expensive classic feels. Some people just think that it would be a nice thing if they can restore it, make it renew again. However, they do not know how doing it properly as they are afraid that it would break the couch.
For your information, there are two ways to restore a leather couch and you can do the simple or the best way. If you want to do it simply, use a leather re-coloring balm, just a simple wipe on and toned application. However, the leather surfaces require being as absorbent as possible to make the balm penetrate clearly. It will really work if the surface of the couch coating has cracked exposing a lighter color instead. The benefit of using this way is cheap, easy to use and the result is really promising. However, it just restores the color. You can apply it more thickly to hide the crack.
If the simple way would not work for your old leather furniture, you can try the second option. It is the most proper way that used by some restoring worker. The first step is preparing for the color application. Remove any oils, silicones and waxes prevent the adhesion problem. If the leather is very dirty, you can use some leather cleaning liquid. You can start from the back and side. For the sides, you can use some alcohol cleaner. The leather is correctly prepped if you see the color transfer from leather to abrasive cloth. This indicates that the cleaning has been removed exposing color. Furthermore, you can spray alcohol cleaner directly on the leather, and then wait for 30 minutes until the alcohol evaporate.
Next, strengthening the leather use a leather binder. It will prevent the leather from future cracking. You can apply it using a sponge and hold the leather to make the binder absorbed properly. Apply for 3-5 time to get the maximum result. Do not forget to wipe the buildup binder before it dries. For the next thing is applying the leather colorant using a sponge. Let it dry naturally before you give the last touch using a spray colorant to make the leather brighter. Now, you have finished restoring the old leather sofa.
